Sun Salutions Literally: Mysore Style Practice Week 1

I have been meaning to start a Mysore practice for a while now. Unfortunatelythe office I work is located at the other side of the town which takes me more than 1 hour to get there and I have to wake up every morning at 7(plus the yoga studio is about 45-60 minutes away) so  I thought it would not be possible for a while. That is why I chose the led primary series practice in the evenings. However, during the Christmas holidays when the studio was closed some evening and I was supposed to practice at home, I caught a nasty flu and I could not even breathe when I was sitting on my couch so I let practice aside for what I thought it would be a few days. That flu stayed with me for 3 weeks though, really frustrating. Last 2 weekends I attended the 30 hour asana immersion seminar and all this talk about yoga and practicing made me miss it so much that I decided I would give Mysore style practice a try even if I had to squeeze my mornings and wake up at 5 every day.

Well, yesterday I did my first practice and today the second. And I have to say that I just LOVE practicing in the morning. I mean, yeah, I have practiced in the morning before. But not that early and not Mysore style. It would be either home practice where I'd be by myself or led practice at some studio. Mysore style is so different and beautiful.

For one, I love that our shala windows face the east. When I get there it is still dark outside but before I finish the Sun Salutations the sun is rising. Now I can talk about sun salutations literally! It feels so great starting your day this way. Also, when I did the evening led class I always had trouble sleeping because I felt too energized to sleep. Now I start my day with all this energy, calmer and clearer mind and a big smile on my face. Last but not least, I enjoy how everyone is practicing on their own pace and how quite it is since our teacher does not have to lead. Only thing you can hear is the sound of breathing.

All in all, I thought that waking up that early and sleeping earlier in the evening would be hard but I really like it, I believe I could get used to it! I guess time will tell.

  1. congrats on starting a mysore practice! your shala sounds lovely. When I started, I switched from led vinyasa classes in the late afternoon or evening to morning mysore, and I was surprised how much I liked it, and how it was not hard to self practice, sort of a relief, actually. The sound of breathing is great, isn't it?

    1. Oh yes it is! And I love how I get all this energy in the morning... it's easier to cope with all the random issues that come up during the day when you have started your day practicing don't you agree?
